Why are HGVs and Depots Targeted at Christmas?
As we approach the festive season, haulage firms are once again being warned to be on their guard against break-ins and vandalism. In the run-up to the 2023 festive season, it was reported that 140 cargo thefts had been committed. Incredibly, total losses were valued at an estimated £1.35million from service stations in one particular area of the UK.
Organised crime
Police found that the majority of the thefts were linked to organised crime gangs across the UK who target not only HGVs on the road but also depots and distribution centres. Unfortunately, the lure of cheap, ‘knock-off’ goods during a cost-of-living crisis is a big driver in this type of crime. Criminal gangs will often plan targeted operations around Christmas in pursuit of large profits.
HGVs can be protected whether out on the road or parked up in the yard by a GPS tracker which can monitor location, movement and cargo security. But, however you choose to protect your fleet and your business, it is worth looking at why thefts increase up to and over the festive period.
Increased stock levels and high-value items
The Christmas period brings higher demand for luxury items and gifts, and retailers will have increased their stock requirements in preparation for the season. Electronics, toys, and alcohol are especially lucrative for thieves, as these can be easily sold on the black market.
Distracted depot staff and temporary workers
In the run-up to Christmas time, everyone gets distracted by other priorities and this is no different for HGV drivers and depot staff. In one of the busiest times of year with increased deliveries and tighter schedules, security measures can easily slide. Workers may be working extra shifts to get orders out. When workers become fatigued, it becomes easier for thieves to exploit security gaps.
Many logistics companies and retailers hire temporary staff over the Christmas season. This can mean that security protocols and background checks may not be as rigid as necessary. A need for quick deliveries can lead to corners being cut such as vehicle or premises security checks.
Darkness provides cover
The shorter days and reduced daylight hours provide the perfect conditions for thieves to strike at HGVs parked up in lay-bys or service stations. Darkness makes it harder for CCTV cameras and security guards to detect suspicious behaviour. In addition, drivers can be unaware of criminals attempting to break in and steal the vehicle or its cargo. A GPS tracker with geofencing alert and cargo monitoring capabilities can help to stop criminal activity in its tracks.
Use secure parking at all times
The National Vehicle Crime Intelligence Service recommends that all truck parking provisions be upgraded to ‘secure standards’. This makes a great deal of sense. However, until the government decides to implement these recommendations, it remains the responsibility of HGV drivers to take all reasonable steps to ensure their vehicles are safely parked and secure at all times.
To conclude, the reduced daylight hours, increased levels of high-value stock and lapses in security are what create the perfect environment for criminality. If you’re worried about your stock, it may be time to invest in more security features for your warehouse or vehicles this winter.
